Add and Subtract Fractions with Like Denominators: Rotation Day A

Outdoor School

Our 5th Graders just spent the the last two days at The Outdoor School in Marble Falls.  So, today, we spent a few minutes of our class time doing a sort of closure.  First, students chose a boy and a girl from their "day group" who demonstrated PRIDE during our stay.

Next, we spent a few minutes changing out the string on our nametags and putting on the beads earned by participation during our stay.  We use these all year as reward incentives.  Students earn beads throughout the year for things like:  A Honor, AB Honor, Perfect Attendance, Citizen of the Month, etc.

Finally, I introduced the Outdoor School plaques.  Basically, each group will vote on the student created plaque that they want to have displayed to remember the trip.

We did actually jump right back into math class as well:

Lesson Frame:

  • We will work in rotations to practice adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.
  • I will explain why it is important to convert improper fractions into mixed numbers where adding or subtracting fractions with like denominators.
Lesson:

My students had struggled with the Magic Number Square last week, so we revisited it today with much greater success.  I also continued with the activity "At Least but No More" in order to solidify student understanding adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.

Assignment:

Students completed Fifth Grade Builder #15.
