Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators: Crisscross Applesauce

Bell Ringer:  SET Game

Lesson Frame:

  • We will learn how to add and subtract proper fractions with unlike denominators using “crisscross applesauce.”
  • I will explain why it is important to have like denominators when adding and subtracting fractions.
Lesson:

New notes today for our math journal on adding and subtracting proper fractions with unlike denominators.  I found a visual to use with my students that I thought they would catch on to...  Crisscross Applesauce.

I also created a screencastify video showing how to use this process.

We continued to practice the process of using crisscross applesauce to add and subtract proper fractions with unlike denominators for a few minutes.  Tomorrow we will continue our practice during our rotations.

Close:

Explain why it is important for fractions to have a common denominator before they can be added or subtracted.

Assignment:
  • First, I had a large group of students who had not completed the Khan Assignment:  Simplify Fractions from last week, so that was their first order of business.
  • Second, students completed Fifth Grade Builder #20
