Geometric Hierarchy

Bell Ringer:  None, shortened classes due to Spelling Bee.

Lesson Frame:

Lesson:

Today we worked on creating a hierarchy of two-dimensional figures.  We created a page of notes and worked on an interactive shape sort I found on Teachers Pay Teachers:

We began with "Polygons" at the top of our hierarchy.  We defined a polygon as having at least three sides, a closed shape, and straight sides.  Then we went to the interactive activity and completed the slide for polygons.

Next we added our first subset, triangles.  We began with this because they are 3 sided.  We named the triangles based on the angles and then named the triangles based on their sides.

We moved to our second subset, quadrilaterals and completed the slide on the interactive activity.  Under quadrilaterals, we added another subset, parallelogram.  We defined parallelograms as having opposite sides as parallel and then completed the slide for parallelograms.  We added to the parallelogram subset by creating a venn diagram for rhombus, square, and rectangle showing that a square is BOTH a rhombus and a rectangle.  I explained that a rhombus and a square share the attribute:  4 congruent sides; and that a square and a rectangle share the attribute:  4 right angles.  We also added the Trapezoid and Kite to our subset, quadrilaterals.

At this point, time ran out due to our shortened class periods.  We we stopped and completed an Exit Ticket from the resource:
