SMART Goal: Khan Academy

Bell Ringer:

We continue our spiral review each day.  I am focusing on the types of problems that typically give my students the biggest issue on the STAAR test.  I am hoping that daily exposure will make these problems come more easily!

SMART Goal: Think Through Math

Bell Ringer:

Using Kahoot to review math concepts. This activity has been a real eye opener!  I am very glad I implemented this activity, it has given my students the opportunity to work with concepts, they struggle with, an ample number of times!

Welcome Back and Minute to Win It

We returned to school today after having a week off for Spring Break.  I decided that this would be a great day to celebrate the classroom that had achieved the most lessons passed on Think Through Math over the last three weeks with a Minute To Win It celebration (see bottom of post).  I am pretty sure Mrs. Dabbs' homeroom (the winners) were pleased with their math class today!  My other two classes had a normal day.

We returned to school today after having a week off for Spring Break.  I decided that this would be a great day to celebrate the classroom that had achieved the most lessons passed on Think Through Math over the last three weeks.  I am pretty sure Mrs. Dabbs' homeroom (the winners) were pleased with their math class today!

You can search the web (specifically Pinterest) to find all kids of Minute to Win It ideas.  The two sites that I used to help me set up my games were:

To set up your classroom for a Minute to Win It competition,

1) I placed 17 colored chips (9 blue, 8 red) in a container and asked my students to pull 1.  This is how I broke my class into two groups, fairly.

2) I had two bowls of numbered tiles (1-9 and 1-8).  I had each student in each group pull a tile to determine which students would place each game (also numbered 1-9).

3) I had already set up the 10 games (one extra in case the winning class had more students) using the websites named above, as well as a Google Slides presentation to help me with rules and visuals on how each game was to be played.

We had reached the point where I had one extra student and one game to play, but no opponent.  To solve this problem, I had the group with one less student draw numbers again, this time, the one who pulled a "9" was the final opponent.

The team that "won" received a full sized candy bar, the consolation prize was miniature candy bars.  All in all, no one felt like they had lost!  They all enjoyed the games, they all enjoyed the competition (which we kept friendly), and they all agreed that this was a great way to begin the final 10 weeks of school!

STEAM Rotations: Rotation 6

Bell Ringer:

We continue to use Kahoot as our spiral review of concepts that typically stump my students.

Lesson Frame:

Lesson:

This is our final rotation with these 6 activities.  I will have some new rotations for the next set.  We will revisit the STEAM activities after our STAAR test in April.

I had six different STEAM challenges with each group having 3 students.  I carefully arranged the students myself, but then each table group the a number that represented one of the activities.  This allowed students to see that I didn't play favorites.

Bloxels - http://home.bloxelsbuilder.com/index.html is a build your own video game activity.  I had three Bloxels kits and three iPads for students to use.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lego Marble Run - https://frugalfun4boys.com/2016/01/13/lego-duplo-marble-run-stem-challenge/ is a STEAM challenge I found on the blog:  Frugal Fun 4 Boys and Girls.  We used the regular Lego sets I have with no difficulty.  This was the only true group activity where students worked together to complete a single outcome.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://littlebits.cc/

littleBits - http://littlebits.cc/ are easy to use electronic building blocks.  I was gifted a class set through Friends of Hamilton.  Again, there were enough pieces for all three students to have their own to explore with.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hour of Code - https://hourofcode.com/us/learn gave students a chance to learn how to code.  To be honest, this was the least favorite, as everything else was more of a hands-on challenge.  I may try to find another hands-on activity next time.

STEAM Engineering Challenge:  Index Card Tower -  https://intentionalstorytime.wordpress.com/hands-on-science/engineering-challenge-index-card-towers/ challenged students to build a freestanding tower using only index cards.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

CrazyAction Contraptions - students worked to create one of the contraptions and, while no one was successful in fully completing the challenge, everyone loved it!

TELPAS Writing Sample #2

Bell Ringer:

Continuing our review using Kahoots.  I believe I am seeing success!!

Lesson:

Each year, we are asked to procure two writing samples from our ELL (English Language Learners) from their math class.  Before, I have used prompts that weren't interesting and were hard to read.  Things like, explain how to solve a long division problem....  think about that....  would you want to have to do that?!?!

Our second prompt was:

I also included a web for brainstorming ideas.

As I wanted well developed writing, I did not assign any additional work.  For those that finished before class was over, they worked on Khan Academy.
