Lesson Frame:
- We will take notes on finding factors and multiples of numbers.
- I will explain the difference between a factor and a multiple.
Lesson:
Today, our focus was taking notes on factors and multiples. I found a resource on Teachers Pay Teachers that fit the bill:
It took about half the class period to work through the notes, adding color to keep them engaged. We covered:
- Multiples (many)
- We found the first 5 multiples of 16 using multiplication. They enjoyed using a calculator.
- Factors (few)
- We found the factors of 16 using divisibility rules and calculators. I wanted them to see when dividing by a number leaves a remainder in decimal form.
- We also wrote the factors in different ways
- factor pairs (peas in a pod)
- t-chart
- factor rainbow
After we placed the notes in their math journal, they spent the remainder of the class completing a Fifth Grade Builder.
