Factors and Multiples

Bell Ringer: Would You Rather

Lesson Frame:
  • We will take notes on finding factors and multiples of numbers.
  • I will explain the difference between a factor and a multiple.
Lesson:

Today, our focus was taking notes on factors and multiples. I found a resource on Teachers Pay Teachers that fit the bill:

It took about half the class period to work through the notes, adding color to keep them engaged.  We covered:
  • Multiples (many)
    • We found the first 5 multiples of 16 using multiplication.  They enjoyed using a calculator.
  • Factors (few)
    • We found the factors of 16 using divisibility rules and calculators.  I wanted them to see when dividing by a number leaves a remainder in decimal form.
    • We also wrote the factors in different ways
      • factor pairs (peas in a pod)
      • t-chart
      • factor rainbow
After we placed the notes in their math journal, they spent the remainder of the class completing a Fifth Grade Builder.
