SMART Goal: Think Through Math

Bell Ringer:

I used a Kahoot to review math concepts.  Today we focused on:  Comparing Decimal, Measurement Conversions, Estimation, Geometry, and Perimeter/Area/Volume.

Lesson:

First, students completed today's Countdown to STAAR 5.3.6.

When they finished, they continued working towards their Think Through Math SMART goal.

SMART Goal: Khan

Bell Ringer:

I used a Kahoot to review math concepts.  Today we focused on:  Order of Operations, Decimal Place Value, Rounding Decimals, and Volume.

Lesson Frame:

Lesson:

First, students completed today's Countdown to STAAR 5.3.5.

When they finished, they continued working towards their Khan SMART goal.

The focus today was working on Khan Academy.  The ultimate goal is 60 skills passed to attend the Khan Banquet at the end of the year.

SMART Goals

Bell Ringer:

Beginning today, I have decided to use a Kahoot each day to help review the concepts my students typically struggle with.

Lesson Frame:

Lesson:

Today we began focusing on SMART goals.

I asked students to create a SMART goal both for Think Through Math and one for Khan Academy.  We have been focusing on Think Through Math since the beginning of school working towards passing 30 lessons.  This goal is set by Think Through Math itself.  They have statistics that show that students who pass 30 lessons or more on Think Through Math have a much higher success rate on the STAAR test.

At this point, we are going to also focus on Khan Academy.  Our school holds a banquet at the end of the year for students who pass 60 skills in their grade level.  In order to achieve this goal, I will be giving class time multiple times each week.

Once we wrote the goals, students completed today's Countdown to STAAR, and then worked on Think Through Math.

Decimal Kahoot: Place Value, Compare, Rounding, Estimate

Bell Ringer:  Would You Rather

Lesson Frame:

Lesson:

I created a new Kahoot for today from the same resource as yesterday.  It is from the same company that I purchased Countdown to STAAR:

I used a variety of questions from the resource, focusing on place value, comparing, rounding, and estimating.

New players left the Kahoot to join the Jeopardy.  These groups began working on the 5th grade decimal activities on Khan Academy:

The rest of the class played Kahoot.  More excitement as there was an even better chance of being in the top 5!

I took out any player from each class who had missed two or fewer from the Kahoot yesterday.  These groups played Decimal Jeopardy

The rest of the class played Kahoot.  The kids were very excited when new names made it to the top 5.  As much as I try, some kids are able to monopolize the game.  Also, I had a few kids who did not do as well as yesterday because they were unable to look at the screen of the person next to them!

Decimals: Place Value, Compare, Rounding, Estimating (1)

Lesson:

I am moving into decimals with my students and wanted to do a Pretest to assess prior knowledge.  I chose to do this with a Kahoot.  I used a different type of resource.  It is from the same company that I purchased Countdown to STAAR:

I used a variety of questions from the resource, focusing on place value, comparing, rounding, and estimating.

Using these questions on a Kahoot allowed me to "test" my kids to see who already knew the information.  The kids from each class who did well, I will have a different activity for them to do tomorrow.  The rest of the kids will continue to play Kahoot individually.  This will make most of them extremely happy.  Even though I always allow time for students to work problems, many still are frustrated when the same five "win".  By taking away those five, students will be much more interested in trying to get problems correct.

I will be using one of these daily as we review decimals.

MSTAR: Middle of Year Diagnostic

Bell Ringer:  SET Game

Lesson Frame:

Lesson:

Today, my students were asked to complete the MStar Universal Screener.

Overview (from https://www.texasgateway.org/resource/estarmstar )

The Elementary School Students in Texas: Algebra Ready (ESTAR) and Middle-School Students in Texas: Algebra Ready (MSTAR) Universal Screeners (US) are an online formative assessment system administered to students in grades 2–4 (ESTAR) and grades 5–8 (MSTAR).
The purpose of the ESTAR/MSTAR US are to help guide instructional decisions in relation to students’ readiness for algebra. The results, which are reported using the Response to Intervention tiers, can be used to help teachers determine if students are on track or at risk for meeting curricular expectations in algebra and for algebra readiness. Results also help teachers determine the intensity of the instructional support students need if they have been identified as at risk for not meeting curricular expectations in algebra and for algebra readiness. Teachers are able to monitor students’ risk status by administering comparable forms of the ESTAR/MSTAR US in fall, winter, and early spring.
The ESTAR/MSTAR Diagnostic Assessments (DA) are administered only to students identified through the ESTAR/MSTAR US as struggling with algebra-readiness knowledge and skills. The DA are used to identity why students are struggling with algebra-related core instruction and to provide information that can be used to plan supplemental instruction.
The ESTAR/MSTAR US and DA can be accessed at https://www.estarmstar.org/login.
Districts that would like to administer the ESTAR/MSTAR Universal Screener and Diagnostic Assessments must create unique district administrator accounts as well as teacher and student accounts.  For questions about accounts and general assistance related to the ESTAR/MSTAR Universal Screener or Diagnostic Assessments, please contact mathtx@esc13.net.

Download the Universal Screener FAQ

This assessment is another piece of data I use as I make educational decisions about how and what to teach.

Once students have completed the Universal Screener, there are Diagnostic Assessments available to help teachers determine where gaps are.

As I wanted students to take the assessment seriously, I did not assign any homework today.

Geometry Assessment

Bell Ringer:

Lesson Frame:

Lesson:

Today it was time to have our geometry assessment.  I used a resource from TPT (imagine that) to create a Google Form to use as a quiz.

This was all I assigned in class as I did not want them to rush through the quiz.  When finished they were to get onto Think Through Math.

Tomorrow I will be out, the sub is being left instructions to have students work through a series of lessons on Khan Academy that deal with geometry.

Once again, we played as table groups and I made sure to give them time to think about and discuss their answers before making a choice.

Our Kahoot today was created from:

Today I allowed the students to work in table groups.  I wanted to reinforce some ideas and sometimes kids learn better from a peer.  I also set the timer for 90 seconds, but do not allow anyone to pick an answer until I say so.  This gives everyone time to think and discuss answer choices.
