Khan Academy: Add and Subtract Mixed Fractions with Unlike Denominators

Bell Ringer:  101 Questions

Lesson Frame:

Lesson:

As you know, we have been working on adding and subtracting mixed fractions with unlike denominators for a while now.  Today, with the help of Khan Adacemy, my students had to show what they know about BOTH adding and subtracting mixed fractions.  Within the activity students had to:
  • Add
  • Subtract
  • Borrow
  • Simplify
  • Convert
This was a challenge, because there always seems to be an element that a student omits... they forget to borrow, or simplify, or convert improper to mixed, or OOPS, they forget to add the "saved" whole number to their answer....

Knowing that they would need time, I did not include a Close or an Assignment today.  Those who were able to finish in the hour given used the remaining time on Think Through Math.
