Bell Ringer:  Would You Rather

Lesson Frame:
  • We will work in rotations to practice adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.
  • I will explain the steps to borrowing when solving a fractions subtraction problem.
Lesson:

Groups 1 & 4 alternated between Think Through Math and a small group session with me that I entitled "At Least but No More".  This activity required students to add fractions together to create a fraction that was at least as big as, but not bigger than, two given whole numbers.

Groups 2 & 3 alternated between Think Through Math and an activity called Magic Square Fun, using addition and subtraction of fractions.  This proved to be quite a challenge.  I had failed to realize that this required the addition and/or subtraction of fractions with UNLIKE denominators.  So... we will revisit this activity next week, but I will change the problems to have like denominators.... for now.
